Okay, let’s talk about the big question – does it hurt to get braces?
It does not hurt to have braces put on. But you should expect that any time your body gets something new (braces, contact lenses, etc), there will be a period of adjustment. Many people compare the discomfort of new braces to the experience of starting a new exercise or sport workout. You can think about your teeth being exercised in a new way with braces!
Discomfort from new braces can be handled with proper use of over-the-counter pain relievers – Tylenol, Motrin, Alleve, Nuprin, etc. These medications work most effectively if you take them 1 to 3 hours before you receive your new braces, and then continue to take them as often as the directions indicate for the next 2 to 3 days.
New braces often feel rough against your cheek or lip. We will give you soft, clear wax to smooth your braces while your mouth gets used to your new appliances.
If your gums or cheeks are sore, warm salt water rinses can instantly make them feel better. Stir a teaspoon of salt into a cup of water and heat it until it feels hot in your mouth, but doesn’t burn. Swish the water around your mouth and then spit it out. Isn’t it amazing how much better your mouth feels?
